Used Car Checklist
When buying a use car there are many things you need to check over before you lay down the cash. We have come up with the most important items to look at when buying a new car.
- Check to make headlights, brake lights, hazard lights and signal lights are working.
- Check for cracks or chips in windshield.
- Check windshield wipers for rust and wear.
- Check to see all hubcaps (wheelcovers are intact.)
- Check mirrors for cracks and corrosion.
- Check for dents and scratches.
- Check tires for air pressure, cracks, tread, bulges and size.
- Check tires for wear on the inner and outer edges.
- Check tires for nicks, cuts and cracks, as well as dry rot.
- Check upholstery for tears, wear and mildew.
- Check power windows to assure they are working.
- Check power locks to see if they are in good working order.
- Check seatbelts to assure they work and that the belts aren’t damaged.
- Make sure the keys fit all doors and will open them without any problem.
- Check the seat adjustments to be sure they are working properly.
- Check the sunroof to make sure it will close and open and that it fits snuggly.
- Check all remote control devices.
- Does the car have an alarm system and if so, is it working properly-
- Check the trunk for jack, spare tire and wheel wrench.
- Is there mildew in the trunk or does it smell musty-
- If the car has wheel locks be sure to get the key.
- Check the instrument panel carefully to be sure all is intact and working.
- Check the air conditioner and heater.
- Make sure the transmission is in good order.
- Is the transmission fluid dirty or gritty-
- Do the gears shift smoothly or do they make noise when shifting-
- Test drive the vehicle and listen for humming, creaks, squeals, vibrating and other odd noises.
- Check the engine for battery corrosion, oil leaks and sludge around or in the oil cap.
- Has the oil been changed regularly. This should be documented
- Check all fluid levels.
- Check the dipsticks for rust, corrosion and sludge.
- Start the car and check for bluish emissions.
- Test drive the car more than once.
- Check steering for quick response.
- Check for hissing, squeals, squeaks and other noises when test driving the vehicle.
- Listen for engine knocks.
- Check the alignment. The car should not pull to either side.
- Does the car corner well or is there squealing and grinding when you turn-
- Check the car’s history. There are now kits available for this in most locations.
- Check the odometer. If numbers are not aligned, it’s been rolled back.
- Has the car ever been in an accident or has it been damaged by water
